LDDA & ISO Present Music Munndays in Munn Park

“Music Munndays” is coming to Munn Park in Downtown Lakeland as a result of a partnership between the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority and Imperial Symphony Orchestra.

Live performances will take place each Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during the series.

ISO booked the musicians, but don’t expect to hear only symphonic music, says Amy Wiggins, ISO’s executive director. The genre-bending, pop/folk Brian Sutherland Duo opens the series. Other weeks will feature jazz, blues and rock music. Members of Lakeland Community Theatre, Theatre Winter Haven and Florida Dance Theatre also will perform during the series.

“We want more downtown employees and visitors to use Munn Park, and the LDDA has been instrumental in adding amenities that make the park more inviting and useful,” says Julie Townsend, the LDDA’s executive director.

The LDDA paid for enhancements to the area’s Wi-Fi signal so Surf Lakeland would have a strong signal throughout the park. Through MIDFLORIDA Spring Obsession donations and Lakeland Parks and Recreation funds, the city installed several sets of tables and chairs.

“We want more use during the workday, so we thought of Music Munndays as a way to get folks out of their offices and into the park to take advantage of these amenities,” Townsend says.

Wiggins loved the idea when she first heard it.

“For us, it’s important to be able to showcase the talented musicians in our community,” Wiggins says. “But also, what a great decompression activity to be able to sit in the sun in a beautiful setting and listen to live music during your lunch hour.”

Tables, chairs and a good Wi-Fi signal mean that not just downtown employees, but also entrepreneurs who often work remotely from area coffee shops can enjoy the outdoors while working from the park.

Restaurants downtown are participating too with regular “to go” meals as well as  “brown bag” lunch specials for Music Munndays.  View those here.

In addition to the music, board games and corn hole will be set up in the park. Colored pencils and coloring books will be available, too.

For those who need further enticement to check out Music Munndays, the LDDA will host prize giveaways that include gift certificates to downtown businesses and tickets to ISO performances.

“I can’t imagine anything more pleasant than spending lunch time in Munn Park listening to live music,” says Ellen Simms, executive director of the Downtown Lakeland Partnership.
